The new movie documents how the famous hockey player came out of retirement to join his two sons playing for the Houston Aeros. It was a risky move for the legendary Canadian, but one he was willing to take with the backing and fierce support of his wife. In fact, it was Howe's wife who brokered the deal for her husband's return.

Hallmark has just released a behind the scenes look at the film which includes comments for its stars, including Michael Shanks of Stargate SG-1 fame. Shanks readily admits this was a dream role for him. He's not only Canadian himself but is an avid hockey fan and amateur player. Also appearing are Kathleen Robertson in the role of Colleen Howe. The informative video can be found at Hallmark Channel's website.

The movie's trailer is also available for viewing now and can be seen here. In addition, the new poster has been released. The stunning poster art focuses on the Howe name.

There's also a photo gallery of scenes from the pic available here.

Andy Mikita, who first worked with Shanks on Stargate SG-1, always wanted the actor for the role and even had thoughts of pairing him with SG-1 co-star Amanda Tapping before settling on Robertson.

Mr. Hockey: The Gordie Howe Story airs on the Hallmark Channel on May 4. The DVD, including Blu-ray, first becomes available at Wal-mart stores on May 7 and then expands elsewhere on July 9.
