It depends on the network and Hulu's agreement. I believe Hulu is owned by ABC, so you probably aren't going to get more popular shows from NBC and CBS and all the other stations they own on Hulu as quickly as you might see one from ABC.
I canceled Hulu plus quite some time ago. It was the same reason I cut the cable a few years ago. I don't mind ads, but I got tired of paying for an abundance of ads, and the ad amount on Hulu seemed to be growing. For the same cost per month I can pay for NetFlix or even Amazon and get the entire season when the DVD releases and watch it without ads. As stupid and even disgusting as some of these ads are getting, and also the total randomness that the networks seem to be airing new eps, it's worth the wait. Example: Marvels Agents of SHIELD came back from a two month holiday hiatus and aired one ep at the beginning of January. The next ep doesn't air till March. Blacklist just came back from a few months hiatus, they have two eps scheduled, but nothing showing after that. No wonder people are getting tired of it all.
