Is 3DTV going to fail?

#21
I think it's just not their time yet. For example, there were some attempts at using touch screens in many devices many years ago, but I think Nintendo DS was the first touch screen console that had a price&quality good enough to get popular and bought by a lot of people. With smartphones, I think it took even longer. I just think 3dtv will make its grand comeback and amaze us all... But not yet, no.
actually phones made the switch long before the DS was popular. You might even go as far to say the DS only caught on so well was kids wanting a touch screen just like their parents. If you don't believe that argument just checking how many iphones model1-3 sold in the US, it is almost ten-fold the DS sales. The comeback is already here, its called 48fps. People don't realize but all the tracking issues and blurriness is non-existent in 48fps. Hobbit and Hobbit 2 were so unbelievably flawless I never had a single bit of eye strain, and boy when Smaug th dragon arrives I felt as scared as Bilbo....

Well I won't argue, I'm not claiming to know everything and I have to admit I get the chronology mixed up sometimes... Still, new tech isn't affordable rightaway, even if it is for the richer people in the US, it might not be so good everywhere else and while we're a big market, trends in Europe can matter too. But on one thing we agree, 3DTV WILL win in the end, I'm just not sure it's going to happen as fast as you think...

It will not fail as long as they continue to make awesome 3D movies like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, despicable Me 2, Lego. If you want the "wow" factor there is only one option. Grab and active 3D Tv and watch SPY KIDS 3D right now!
I've seen some 3D in the theaters and in really nice home theaters, and never really got that wow factor. Again, my argument against 3D has always been that it sacrifices picture quality.

the buying power of parents with kids who love movies like Lego and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 should not be underestimated. The DS is the top selling portable and if kids movies continue in 3D the TV's will sell with it

I don't see how 3DTV could fail. It's cool now and I think it's enough to make it work... People want to get new, cool stuff they can show off and they will get it unless it makes them go bankrupt. (And sometimes if it does) A few years and it will be weird not to have one

Still am apt to disagree. I do think you will see most people have Smart TV's. Just don't see a huge push for 3D. My local Wal-Mart has one model out of all the TV's they sell.

Nope. Don't agree. Is everyone on this forum under 30, now?? I'm 62 y.o. and they had the goofy glasses and the whole nine yards when I was a kid. It keeps trying to make a comeback every ten yearszzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Sorry. Dozed off for a moment.

3d is a very, very minor part of our visual experience. We're predators. Our eyes are too close together. Now horses -- they see in 3D! They can almost see straight backward and forward at the same time. Our brains aren't wired to process that much information. We process color better than most animals. Forget about 3D. :deadhorse:

But look at the technology we have now and compare it to the previous glasses, movies... You really can't compare. Everyone enjoyed 3D movies in cinemas some years ago but people didn't even think about having such technology possible to use at home because it was so expensive, but now as 3DTV is getting easier and cheaper while maintaining desirable quality... I think it will finally catch on.

3D will survive and will win this fight. You keep talking about glasses, but you forget about the TV's and computer monitors they have made with non-glasses 3D. At Coachella I saw a hologram of TUPAC, it seriously looked and felt like he was still alive. If they can bring an artist back to life in a 3D performance clearly the technology is advanced enough to begin the transition to glasses-free 3D and what they have accomplished with the 3D medium in the last 5-10 years is proof it will never fail and it will not disappear again.

I'm not saying decades ago, but... For example The Polar Express is 10 already and I remember really liking the effects when it came out. And who thought they could have something like that in their own house, then?

I think 3DTV is about 5-10 years ahead of its time for the home. Just not enough content yet to make it worth the average consumer's time to use. That being said, I would buy an HDTV if it happens to come with 3D capability, but I won't spend more money for it.

If 3D wins the fight for turf in the living room, it will be the beginning of the end for the human race. TV is a form of entertainment. It should never be mistaken for reality.

Rick
Again with your bogus and misguided opinions, how exactly is 3D TV going to be mistaken for reality anymore than current programs such as The Hills, Real Houswives of..., Jersey Shore, and the Kardashians. People constantly view these as reality and real-life, but Snooki is the farthest example of a real person I have ever seen. These are not real people they are characters, sadly grasping for any fame they can get, and kids all across America imitate the behavior and LOOK-UP to these people (it's so disheartening). If anything you could say that 3D is expanding the gap between entertainment and reality, and in fact further seperates the two. Any general knowledge of psychology would result in you coming to this conclusion, but again you ignore logical thought and any understanding of human nature.

I don't even think YOU believe that.

Again with your bogus and misguided opinions ... again you ignore logical thought and any understanding ...
You're a real prince, you know that?
