It appears as though I was charged when signing up for my free trial of Netflix

Netflix should not charge you for your free trial month even though you have to put in your payment information. Some financial institutions will put the amount or the next month on hold without actually charging you and then release it if you cancel before the next month rolls over. I would suggest calling Netflix support and asking them what is up. Also make sure that no one else has previously used your credentials to sign up as Netflix only allows one free trial per credit card holder.
