Summary: Large print remote will power LG TV on and off, but volume only registers once. After that any volume presses bring up the LG home menu, not the volume, so no volume control. It does this until the TV is powered off and back on, then it repeats the same behavior.
Details:
My mom has developed vision issues, and so she ordered the large button remote from Comcast. Unfortunately, it will not pair with her TV, which is an OLED55C7P from 2018. It is connected via wifi and fully up to date with the latest LG firmware.
The new remote exhibits the following behavior:
1) When using one of the remote codes that work-ish, the power button successfully turns the TV on and off.
2) Pressing the volume up or down will register with the TV only ONCE. If pressed again it instead brings up the LG home menu of apps, etc, and does not bring up the volume slider until the TV is powered off and back on, at which point it again only works once.
What I've tried:
1) Every LG code in the manual, of course. Multiple times. (For what it's worth, I work in IT so I can follow instructions half way decently. The remote is quite simple and easy to program, and I had no issues with that.)
2) An hour with the manual process and about 200-300 presses. I found a number of different options, but they all do the same thing - power only, no volume control.
3) Power cycling the TV by unplugging it, holding down the power button and pressing it a few times, waiting 5 minutes, plugged back in, and powered up.
4) Exchanging the remote for a new one.
5) Tried the remote with our LG TV, model 49SK8000PUA. Similar era TV but not the OLED model. Does the exact same thing.
6) With some searching I found one post from a few years back on another forum with the same issue, same symptoms, but no fix was posted. I've searched far and wide and haven't found anything else.
Is this remote just fundementally incompatible with these TVs, or is there something I am missing?
