This is the ultimate “find out who we really are” game in the sense that a loss for either team will all but guarantee their fate for this season. Since the merger, only one team has ever made the playoffs after starting 0-4. The Bears have been abysmal on offense thus far, averaging just 15 points a game. Brian Hoyer gave the passing game a much needed spark last week, throwing for over 300 yards in their loss to Dallas. A big portion of that came late in garbage time though, and the Bears ultimately went 2 for 10 on 3rd down conversions. So it’s difficult to say whether or not you can trust a Hoyer led offense.

Still, the Lions have given up 39 and 34 points already. It’s now or never for Chicago at home. By the same token, the 1-2 Lions are facing one of the worst teams in the league. If their defense is unable to show up against a backup QB (Brian Hoyer) and backup rookie RB (Jordan Howard), they can forget about posing a threat to the Vikings and Packers this season. The Lions are allowing teams to convert 50% of their 3rd downs. That’s the second highest rate in the league. They’ve also only forced one turnover in 3 games. No team can string wins together with that sort of defensive performance. The Lions need to not only win this game, but win it with a strong defensive effort. This is the perfect opportunity to forget about the past and reinvent themselves. They can’t keep being the team that just puts up stats and loses close games.

Look for the Lions to get Dwayne Washington and Golden Tate going early. Theo Riddick has yet to prove he can handle the rushing workload in light of Ameer Abdullah’s injury, and Marvin Jones will be receiving a lot more attention from defenses moving forward. Washington, Tate and Anquan Boldin, to some extent, will need to start making more plays if the Lions are going to make a run this year. Otherwise, their offense will become too predictable. The Bears will need the same from Jordan Howard, Eddie Royal and Kevin White. It can’t keep on being Alshon Jeffery makes a play or it’s 3 and out.
