Which modem/router combo should I go with? Or would it be better to rent a modem/router combo from Comcast? They want $10/month. Seems expensive to me.

The alternative is to buy some expensive piece of hardware, and assume the cost of replacement after the warranty expires.

Perhaps you can get some discount ?

Also if its rented and something goes wrong, its not your problem ...

Are you sure you have a choice on the modem? I know with TWC you have to pick from a very short list, and you wind up paying the same price. If it's not one of their modems, you have to call them and go through a handshaking process. If their computer doesn't like your modem, you don't get internet. Once you get it, service continues only to the MAC (Media Access Control) address unique to that modem. In general, they make it a huge hassle to use your own modem.
