Hempfield is one of numerous Pennsylvania municipalities facing a potential challenge from the Federal Communications Commission over the way it imposes right-of-way fees to telecommunication companies.

A challenge to the right of municipalities to levy fees could cost the township as much as $10,000 a year in revenue, said manager Kurt Ferguson.

The FCC filed a notice of inquiry earlier this year seeking information about removing obstacles and streamlining access to Internet service. The board of supervisors hired a Pittsburgh law firm, The Cohen Law Group, to help respond to a lengthy questionnaire about the fees it charges for cable television in the township.
