renting vs owning cable modem

Should I stop renting my cable modem through Comcast? I was paying $5 a month, but they just raised the rental fee to $7 now. I'm starting to think it would be better if I bought a modem. Any ideas?

Renting anything is never a good deal, unless you only need it short - term. At $7 a month, your payback period is about 10-12 months for a ~ $80 modem. After that, your modem is paid for.

Or, you can continue pay Comcast $840 over the next 10 years for an $80 modem. I guess they need it more than you...

(It WILL be more than $840. The rental price will only go up!)
