Reward disqualified - DirecTV

I connected my AT&T service on 4/5 and was mailed a leaflet to request my reward Visa card but was told it was disqualified. It said it was disqualified because my service was disconnected. However, I have connected service. As a matter of fact, the first bill hasn't been produced yet to be paid. Was this a scam to get me to switch from Comcast? Do I need to return to Comcast if this is any early indication of how AT&T treats their customers?
