Suggestions for a good DTV tuner?

I recently was trying for a friend out in the fringe a simple DTV box model Ematic AT103B to find with the large antenna we have half installed it just does not seem to tune right with it. I hooked up my laptop with the win-TV 850 to see the immediate difference between what the Ematic could pick up and the technology made by hauppage.

He does not want or need anything complicated. Any simple Tuner boxes out their that work well at picking tuners that you personally have used and liked?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Zephar,

I have a ViewTV converter box / tuner that is as good as the tuner in my Samsung HDTV. Mine is an older model, around two years old and I have heard they have recently been improved. http://www.viewtvbox.com/

Assuming your Ematic box is working correctly, it should offer similar performance.

Well I did some research through google, The ematic while is on a common chipset and software used by many set top boxes. Has Bugs they never delivered an update to fix. So why I was getting suggestions for other tuner boxes.

Most of these inexpensive boxes use the same chipset. Firmware updates are spotty at best from most of the brands. iView seems to make updates fairly often, but sometimes older firmware works better (I know, it makes no sense)
You will find that every one of them is a bit quirky - to varying degrees.
