This thread is for discussion of the summer 2010 television season. A separate thread has been created for discussion of the upfront presentations wherein television broadcasters present their fall 2010 programming, and for the discussion of the fall television season, itself.

The summer television season begins Friday, May 28, 2010, though some summer premieres are as early at May 7.

At the beginning of this thread, you will find the following:

Summer Schedule
Premiere/Return Dates
Descriptions of New Scripted Programming
Renewals/Cancellations/Endings Scorecard

Generally, the information you'll find at the beginning of this thread will focus on scripted programs on most major networks, as well as unscripted programs on ABC, CBS, CW, Fox, and NBC, though other programming may be discussed.

Descriptions of New Scripted Programs

ABC

The Gates [6/20]
Nestled inside a private mountain community are The Gates. The image of perpetual suburban bliss, each street is lined with perfectly manicured homes protected by the massive iron gates, but a dark and delicious secret is buried just beneath the surface of this picturesque neighborhood.

Like most families that settle inside The Gates, the Monahans are unmoored from a complicated life they abandoned in Chicago. Named the new police chief of The Gates, Nick Monahan is expecting a change of pace in this quiet suburb. Nick's wife, Sarah, and their children, Charlie and Dana, are embarking on new adventures as well. Their house is to die for, but amidst the excitement, Sarah is still burdened with the revelation that her husband may not be the man she thought he was. Charlie and Dana will also face some challenges of their own: Along with navigating the trials and tribulations of adolescence, they'll also face the daunting task of fitting into their new upscale school, where their new friends run in tight-knit packs.

There's something very different about this place, almost... haunting. Unions will be complicated by friends with unnatural influence, insatiable housewives will struggle with ravenous cravings, and teenagers will be cursed with keeping their beastly instincts in check. The Monahans are facing an uncertain fate. Nick is about to be tangled up in a mystery where he will begin to piece together the dark truth about their new home, and the supernatural elements that lurk behind the shadows of The Gates.
Scoundrels [6/20]
"Scoundrels" is a one-hour comedy/drama series produced by ABC Studios that focuses on a family of small-time criminals who try to go straight after the father is sent to prison. Virginia Madsen, Independent Spirit Award winner as well as an Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee ("Sideways," "The Astronaut Farmer"), will play Cheryl West, the mother who must take charge and try to keep her kids on the straight and narrow.
Rookie Blue (previously Copper) [6/24]
A fun, fresh, high-stakes drama with a twist of danger follows the lives of five young, ambitious cops right out of the Academy. From their very first day on the job, these rookies are plunged into the world of big city policing, a world where even the smallest mistake can have life-or-death consequences and serious emotional fall-out. The soul of this close-knit group is 26-year-old perfectionist Andy McNally (Missy Peregrym). Honest to a fault, all Andy has ever wanted to be is "good police." Her father was a cop, and while he wasn't the best cop -- or the best father - Andy knows she'll never find this sense of family, loyalty and excitement in any other job. The series explores the trials, triumphs, competition and camaraderie of Andy and her rookie family -- boyfriends, best friends, mentors and competitors -- who are about to learn that no amount of training can prepare them for life.

CBS

The Bridge
The Bridge is a drama about a tough and dedicated police officer who is voted to become the police union's dynamic leader. To serve the public as well as his 8,000 fellow officers, charismatic Frank Leo (Aaron Douglas) battles criminals on the street, corruption in the ranks and his own bosses. On the force is his able partner and confidante Tommy Dunn (Paul Popowich), who rides with Frank across the bridge that spans the divide between the rich and the poor in the area they patrol; Staff Sergeant Bernie Kantor (Frank Cassini), a voice of reason and moral sounding board; Jill (Inga Cadranel), a detective with a lot of attitude who is moving up the ranks; Billy (Theresa Joy), a young female cop who is determined to prove herself to the guys; and Ed Wycoff (Michael Murphy), the shrewd Chief of Police. Abby St. James (Ona Grauer) is a sharp prosecutor who begins working with the police union, and shares a mutual attraction with Frank. In his new position, Frank Leo takes on the politically-motivated department brass... and makes many powerful enemies in the process.

So now that CBS has made their final tweaks, I was looking at what's coming up this summer, with the summer season starting on Friday.... and I'm not sure there's gonna be enough for us! :)

Sunday
9:00-10:00 pm
__________ABC: Scoundrels [6/20]
__________AMC: Rubicon [8/1]
__________HBO: True Blood [6/13]
Scoundrels seemed weak, but y'know, it's commercials have been growing on me. We'll watch the first episode and decide.

Rubicon looks like it could be as good as Mad Men.

No problem with having three shows and only two tuners in the DVR: We don't actually have HBO. :) We're actually a full season behind on True Blood, so we're going to be catching last season on disc, from Blockbuster.

Sunday
10:00-11:00 pm
__________ABC: The Gates [6/20]
__________AMC: Mad Men [7/25]
__________Showtime: The Real L Word [6/20]
__________TNT: Leverage [6/20]
The Gates also looked weak, originally, but we'll record it and see what the buzz on the street is.

No problem with having four shows and only two tuners in the DVR. We don't have Showtime, and are actually a season behind with The L Word, so we'll be catching that on disc, from Blockbuster. And Leverage is repeated a couple of hours later.

Monday
8:00-9:00 pm
__________Fox: Lie To Me [6/7]
9:00-10:00 pm
__________TNT: The Closer [7/12]
10:00-11:00 pm
__________Showtime: Weeds [8/16]
__________TNT: Saving Grace [continues]; then Rizzoli & Isles [7/12]
Yet-again, we're a season behind with Weeds, so we'll catch it on disc, from Blockbuster.

Tuesday
8:00-9:00 pm
__________ABC: Wipeout [6/1, 6/22]
9:00-10:00 pm
__________Syfy: Warehouse 13 [7/13]
__________USA: White Collar [7/13]
10:00-11:00 pm
__________A&E: The Glades [7/13]
__________USA: Covert Affairs [7/13]
The Glades is another show we'll record but probably not watch.

Covert Affairs looks like a very good companion to White Collar.

Wednesday
9:00-10:00 pm
__________Bravo: Top Chef [6/16]
10:00-11:00 pm
__________USA: Psych [7/21]
Not much going on on Wednesday.

Thursday
8:00-9:00 pm
__________CW: Vampire Diaries (encores)
9:00-10:00 pm
__________ABC: Rookie Blue [6/24]
__________USA: Burn Notice [6/3]
10:00-11:00 pm
__________USA: Royal Pains [6/3]
We'll record Rookie Blue only because it stars the woman who played Andi in Reaper. We probably won't end-up watching it.

We missed the second half of the season for Vampire Diaries (because it was on up against FlashForward and Bones). I hope they rerun the second half of the season... they're starting back up again with Episode 1, so there doesn't actually seem like there is going to be enough time to catch up...

Friday
9:00-10:00 pm
__________CBS: Flashpoint [6/4]
__________Syfy: Eureka [7/9]
10:00-11:00 pm
__________Starz: Pillars of the Earth [7/23]
__________Syfy: Haven [7/9]
We don't have Starz, so we'll actually have to wait a year or so for Pillars of the Earth.

Haven looks like it could be very good... we're really looking forward to it.

Saturday
9:00-10:00 pm
__________BBC America: Doctor Who [continues] then Being Human [7/24]
We've been recording Doctor Who, but holding off watching them, waiting for the video discs, because we don't get BBC American in HD here.

So for those keeping count, that's about 19 hours of television (not counting the shows that we're recording but probably won't be watching), which probably could be enough for us, except a lot of what you're seeing there are series that start later in July, or end by July, so figure in any specific week, that list represent about 14 hours, which is a little thin for us. Even during the summer we tend to watch about 16-17 hours. (Really, 13 hours, but since we DVR everything, 17 hours broadcast = 13 hours of watching time, skipping over the commercials.)

Taking out the shows that I mentioned above that we'd be watching on disc, that's about two or three hours less programming than what we recorded last year. A thinner summer in terms of what looks good to watch, to us.

We will make up for the two gaps (the gap between what we recorded last year versus what we will record this year; and the overall gap between the 14 hours of programming that are listed above, and the 16-17 hours that we typically watch over the summer) with more discs from Blockbuster. We've got Dexter queued up, as well as The Tudors, Nurse Jackie, and some movies, including Sherlock Holmes, Time Traveler's Wife, Angels & Demons, New Moon, etc.

How does this summer look like its shaping up for you?

As many of us figured would happen, ABC has canceled Happy Town before showing the final two episodes of the mystery. It is possible that they will use it as filler burn-off some Saturday during the summer.

Interesting; not only a rerun in the middle of the season, but the week right after that is a "new" episode that contains only rebroadcasts of reports from previous seasons.

It's too hot to be outside today, for us, so I think we'll be watching America The Story of Us today, on The History Channel. It started at 8AM, and continues through our history, until 8PM.
