My first modem was a 2400 baud modem I got from a friend. I think it was a US Robotics.

But we have had a computer since the early 80s.

Why did it take us so long to get a modem?

We didn't have a telephone until 1989.

BTW, watching the engineer using a stencil and pen and paper to design a circuit sure shows how far we've come.

When I was in high school we had to take a technical drawing class in preparation for university. No CAD. You had to use drawing paper, a T square, compasses and the like. Well I didn't go to college straight after school. I did that a few years later after emigrating to the US. Between the time I left HS and the time I entered college the world had changed so much. No drawing on paper at all. Design of electronic circuits and systems was done with software and we designed virtual instruments with NI Labview. The internet was in full bloom. And yet things are still changing. Simply amazing.
