Biggest difference from a regular DVD player and a Blu-Ray player is higher resolution, which means a better picture. The wiki entry that 1inxs does a pretty good job explaining it. It's also dependent on your TV too, if you have a newer HD TV set, you'll get a much better picture.

Blu-Ray uses a blue-violet laser as opposed to the red laser used on DVDs.
This allows Blu-Ray discs to hold a lot more information on them than DVDs.
Blu-Ray is essentially the next generation of DVD.

The main difference with ordinary ones and the Blu ray ones are that they have higher resolution which leads to more comfortableness for the viewers. However we have to remember this higher resolution is only more effective to blu ray discs and not regular DVD ones.

I have a lot of comfortableness when viewing regular DVDs too. hehehe :second:

Back to the question at hand: As Beelzebul explained, the blue-violet laser is more efficient (it has a shorter wavelength) allowing Blu-ray Discs to hold more information in less space. Up to 25GB/50GB.
