What kind of channels can I get without a cable box?

Hi, I've been thinking about trying to lower my monthly bill from Cox by giving the cable box that I'm renting back to them. How many channels would I get once I do that and are there any premium channels without a box?

By law, terrestrial MVPDs are required to provide local, over-the-air channels, in-the-clear (i.e., without a cable box). In addition, most larger, terrestrial MVPDs are committed to providing those same channels in analog through June 12, 2012.

Those are likely to be the only channels that will be available to you.

Not only would premium channels not be accessible without a device that supports decryption, but generally expanded basic cable networks, such as ESPN, TNT and Disney, are likely to be inaccessible as well.

Although you won't receive 'Premium Channels' have you considered trying to receive stations FREE 'over-the-air' using an antenna like Rabbit Ears or an outside antenna?

You might be surprised! I personally receive over 30 free channels here with NO cable or satellite bills to pay.

Some people with basic cable through QAM are getting more than they pay for... temporarily. Some cable companies just hasn't gotten around to blocking them yet. Yea, and try the antenna, also. 30 channels here too... and I am in an area serviced only by translators.

Well without knowing where you live it's hard for us to tell exactly what you would get since the channel line-up would be different within Cox's territories. But the simplest way for you know is to simply disconnect the cable from the box and hook it directly to the TV and do a channel scan.

I gave my box back about a year ago and found out I was able to get 60 plus channels on the tube with out the 8$ a month charge plus the channels were the good ones discovery, disney, nick fx mtv spike hist animal plant etc, then I hook up the new minibox 10 to 20 crappy channels mostly infomercial and gov access bunch of nothing. unplug the mini back to the good. soon they will force all their clients the minibox and charge them for it. basically the new mini box is a way for them to control the signal, I say unhook ride the free stuff while you can....

I liked Jim's reply. You are quite fortunate to live at a location with so many line of site strong UHF signals. Enjoy it. In many locations large antenna arrays are required to receive even few major networks.
