When to use a amplifier with a TV Antenna

I've seen some discussions on other forums about amplifiers and their usefulness but is there any real way to determine if an amplifier might help before actually purchasing one? Is there a way to determine how much RF noise you potentially have from a map TVFool.com?

The RF 'noise' you refer to is generated by devices near your receiving antenna such as fluorescent lights, wireless routers etc. There's no way for TVFOOL to predict it. All amplifiers and pre-amplifiers add some 'noise' to a datastream and how much additional 'noise' is usually disclosed in the product specifications.
